A lot of people believe that a leaf-sprung 4wd vehicle acquires its “ride” through the deflection of the spring arch (up and down) to absorb the impact of the terrain. While this is partly true, the majority of a springs’ ability to absorb the impact of changes in terrain is from the pivoting action of the shackle (back and forth), as the vehicle is moving along.
Understanding this, you can see how important it is for the bushes in a leaf spring to be able to rotate and pivot on the shackles and pins freely.
Over the years, various brands of bushes have been marketed as ‘’all the rage’’ for leaf-sprung 4WD vehicles, and to the disappointment of many 4wd owners. The result of fitting some types of bushes has included ride-harshness, squeaking, limited bush life, shackle binding, and increased vibration transmitted into the vehicle.1
